Ireland’s progeny testing programme which is carried out by ICBF at Tully, Co. Kildare recently slaughtered 50 Dairy Beef Heifers at Slaney Foods International, Bunclody, Co. Wexford. The progeny were sired by 16 different sires across 4 different breeds Angus, Hereford, Shorthorn and Limousin. (more…)
Based on figures calculated by Animal Health Ireland’s own Cell Check Quick Calculator, the cost of mastitis for a herd averaging 300-400,000 cells/mL is estimated at €186.26/cow/year. For a 100 cow herd, this amounts to a staggering €18,626 reduction in profit. (more…)

According to AHI, one important aspect of the dry period is Dry-Cow Therapy (DCT). This is the treatment of cows at the end of lactation with a long acting antibiotic and/or an internal teat sealer. Using DCT is one of the components of an effective mastitis control programme. (more…)
