Pj Hegarty runs a pedigree and commercial herd under the ‘Gaggin’ prefix in Bandon, Co. Cork. He has been involved in the breeding of pedigree cattle for over 20 years, breeding Limousins and Belgian Blues before solely specialising in Limousins.
Currently, there are 30 cows in the herd with half being pedigree. He runs his own pedigree bulls with the commercial herd. He then takes full advantage of AI to breed his pedigree stock. The main breeding objectives for PJ at the moment are to breed bulls that are easy calving with short gestation. This seems to be working with several of his bulls now in AI including ‘Gaggin Timely – LM1946’. Owned by Dovea Genetics, he is the number one bull on the 2025 Gene Ireland Replacement Index panel at €199.
PJ is delighted with the way the Stock Bull Finder offers him another platform to sell his bulls, particularly among new buyers. He said that the ability for buyers to see the Replacement and Terminal figures of the bulls as well as their weights does help generate calls and ultimately sales.
