What is EBI?

EBI is a single figure profit index aimed at helping farmers identify the most profitable bulls and cows for breeding dairy herd replacements. It comprises of information on eight sub-indexes related to profitable milk production. These are; (1) Milk Production, (2) Fertility, (3) Calving Performance, (4) Beef Carcass (5) Carbon, Cow Maintenance (6) Health, (7) Maintenance and (8) Management. A summary of the sub-indexes, including traits and relative weightings for traits in the EBI is displayed in Chart 1, e.g. Fertility has a 25% weighting in the EBI. Economic values in the index are based on data collected from Irish Dairy Farms and the Dairy Industry. These values were last updated in November 2022.

WHPR Breeder Profile

The new ICBF Whole Herd Recording Program has just recently passed the significant milestone of having 500 pedigree breeders signing up to avail of the service. The new WHPR program has replaced the old way in which pedigree beef herds were performance recorded by ICBF.

Stats - Dairy AI Usage by Breed

As previously mentioned the number of serves per cows recorded on AI handheld devices is up 7% when compared to this time 12 months ago. The breeds with the most serves recorded so far in 2017 and for same time period in 2016 are listed below.

ICBF Database in Numbers

Genotypes
1 Million

There are over 6.1M Genotypes in the national database and counting. ICBF is the largest Beef Genomics database in the world.

SNPs
1 Billion

That’s ‘Billion’ with a ‘B’ (Over 218 times the population of China). SNPs are the most common type of genetic variation between animals.

Pieces of Data
1 Billion

There are over 2 Billion pieces of phenotypic (non genomic) data stored on the ICBF database.
