GI Maternal Beef

Gene Ireland Maternal Beef Breeding program

The Gene Ireland Maternal Beef Breeding program was launched  in Autumn 2012.  The program was established by ICBF in conjunction with industry partners. The overall aim of the program is to achieve much greater rates of genetic improvement in Irish beef production through high quality data recording and progeny testing a higher number of suitable beef bulls.

The Gene Ireland Maternal Beef breeding program will facilitate and promote herds that follow best practice in terms of data recording and management.

There are 3 main elements to the program. These are as follows:

1. Data assessment and validation:

  • Herd Data Quality Index (HDQI): Herds will be assessed based on their overall Herd Data Quality Index (HDQI) score. The HDQI assesses information quality and quantity on the recording of nine traits/events for completeness and timeliness. These nine traits/events range from recording inseminations and calving ease to linear scoring of animals. Herds will receive notification if their HDQI score does not meet the required standard set out by the program. As part of the notification the herd owner will have an appropriate period of time to address and improve their HDQI to the standard required to continue in the program. Failure to address this will result in the herd being removed from the program. Refer to the terms and conditions enclosed for further details..
  • Beef breeding chart: Breeders will be sent a chart to record any missing pregnancy information (sire used, insemination date, calving date) on pedigree females in the herd.
  • Weight, docility and functionality records: Personnel will be allocated to collect weight, docility and functionality records on all pedigree animals in the herd as part of a complimentary “start-up” visit.

2. Herd visit:

Personnel will then visit farms to offer advice on all aspects of the program. The visit will also advise on how accuracy of indexes can be affected by inconsistent management practices of animals of similar age within a herd.

3. Benefits of the program:

Breeders will be able to avail of the following services and information:

  • Potentially have a bull purchased by the program for semen collection.
  • Allocation of stored semen from Gene Ireland (GI) AI bulls to your herds. These are bulls that have gone through the new program and have excelled on either the new Terminal or Maternal index. Only bulls that have a high reliability i.e. proven bulls will have their semen release back into bull breeder herds. There is no charge to the breeder for the semen on the basis that the cost is covered by the annual fee to join the program.
  • Marketing stamp to allow promoting as a “Gene Ireland bull breeding herd”.
  • Mating suggestions based on the new €uro-Star indexes for all breeding females in the herd with particular emphasis on elite cows to produce bulls required for the GI beef breeding program.
  • Guidance around best practice for rearing of young bulls.
  • Assessment of information quality and quantity using the Herd Data Quality Index report.  Also, advice on how you can improve the index for your herd.
  • Reports in relation to herd health.
  • Promotion of the herd to pedigree and commercial herd owners through the ICBF website, Herdbooks and various forms of media.
  • Promotion of elite young bulls that meet certain criteria within the herd to AI companies.
  • Provision of information on functionality of bulls through a stock bull functionality index
  • Provide priority access to new technology’s such as genomics to herds.

Gene Ireland SIGN-UP FORM
along with the annual fee (€250/herd/year) to the address (HerdPlus, Highfield House, Shinagh, Bandon, Co Cork). Herds must sign up for a four year period. The period of four years starts from the date the application form is processed. Herds are only eligible to join the program if their relevant Herdbook has signed up to the program.
