Objectives.

The main aim of the programme is to identify and progeny test beef AI sires with high performance on carcass weight, conformation and feed intake for beef production without comprising on calving difficulty or gestation length for the dairy cow. These bulls have been selected for easy calving, combined with good carcass merit.

Progeny Testing.

The program is available to any dairy farmer who is using beef AI and is willing to record data such as insemination dates, calving ease, calf vigour and calf size. Programme partners then purchase a percentage of the calves for growth and health trait analysis. A proportion of these calves will then enter the ICBF Tully performance test station for feed efficiency, methane production and meat-eating quality analysis. Based on the results of the initial progeny test, the highest performing sires can then be used in pedigree beef herds which, in turn, will produce the next generation of beef bulls for the dairy herd.
