The first sale at Tully was held in March 2003. The sales at Tully have been increasing in profile every year since the first sale, with an increase in buyer attendance and average sale price. This increase in both buyer attendance and sale price is primarily due to an increase in demand for the top quality bulls from Tully, by both pedigree and commercial breeders.
National records have been set in Limousin, Charolais, and Angus breed classes in the last three years under ICBF management. Notable records include the sale of Milbrook Vintage, a Tully Limousin bull, for a record €30,000 to a Scottish purebred herd in October 2005; the sale of a Charolais bull, Kilkullen Ted, to Progressive Genetics in 2003; and the sale of an Angus bull, Lisduff Dandy, to a Welsh purebred herd for €16,000.
It is envisaged that three sales will be held in 2006, this being due to an increase in buyer demand and larger numbers of bulls available for sale in each intake. It is proposed that these sales will be held on 4th March, 6th May, and a yet to be specified date in October/November in 2006.
Judging of bulls takes place six days before the sale, with prizes given to bulls with a combination of high performance figures (BLUP, EBI, Feed Conversion Efficiency) and good visual.
Preparation for the sale involves washing, clipping and grooming of bulls. This may be carried out by the bull owner or by a grooming team.
Bulls are offered for sale in lots, with the order predetermined by animal breed and age. The order by which a breed is offered for sale is changed every sale.
On the market selling of bulls in the ring, with a minimum bid of €1500.
The bulls are stalled in a manner that enables ease of management, with no preference given to any particular breed.
Breed societies advertise all Tully sales on their respective websites, and also note the Tully sale in any forms of advertisement, and publications.
Catalogues are now available to prospective buyers at least four months prior to the stated sale date. This catalogue is also available for viewing on the ICBF website (www.icbf.com/services/tully).
